Just what I was thinking, Cris. Count one to NO. (Although I can think of
some poets where its probably the readers that should be paid!)
And I do 'dare' to disagree, David, (though it didn't really require a
dare) - given a distinction between career and careerism, which poets, inthe
same proportion as people of other (dare I say it) professions, can make.
But I'm not, please note, saying the residency-workshop-community service
should be obligatory, or is in any way necessary to be a poet. So the
latter-day equivalent of William Blake can continue to get his or her kit
off in his garden to his or her heart's content, and good luck to them.
And to you.
Best,
Mark
