I guess irony, and its absence, are ever in the eyes of the beholder. I
find parts of PL magnificent, yet the parts describing the celestial
scrap, which some critics see as ironic (when describing the
war-machines of Lucifer), I find laboured and ever the obvious
explaining. Not an unknown view, I believe. There again, I thought the
juxtaposition of the late Laureate with the big boys was ironic, after
all, haven't many pundits been refering to him as a 'great poet' in the
sense of which our Ancient Fathers are seen (please no-one ask me about
our Ancient Mothers, I don't know what they did with them either)
ironic, ain't it?
