Hi,
several posts have, in very differing ways, raised issues
of concensus - a common. Carnivals often take place on such commons.
Commons, or a common needn't be large to be interesting. Don't forget the local
- translocal possibilities.
Writig with any sense of inhibitive proscription about who can and who
can't undewrstand something seems to this writer / reader a daft exercise.
While one lot of referents will be at ease with Brian Adams there are many
others listening to Squarepusher. These bases for discussion are reductive
and naive.
Einstein is readily understood by everybody? We all know how the microwave
works? Everyone here writes their own programmable media?
Establishing a common is a political act; Diggers and Wobblies and
Squatters rights. In writing, the territory is language. Through acts of
language one proposes positions, possibilities. Hence a syntactical move
might well speak directly of political transformation or environmentalism
(the book as an environment with an ecology of materials); a neologism
might be a naive expression of hope from within a language which has a
paucity of words in respect of touch or snow, it might not be anything
other than a utopian longing for expansions of conscious attentions, but
that might be an improvment on acceptance that a given language is a best
of all possible languages; paradigms are recognisable as necessary in the
moment of being interrogated and challenged with the possibility that other
behaviour is possible, even desirable.
Why do languages die away? At the end of the day at the end of the day when
all's said and done, when push comes to shove . . . invention and
imagination is needed for a language to live a robust usage. How do new
expressions enter a language? 'I' is never not present in writing -
however 'mechanical' or 'unnatural' the processes applied . . . surely? It
needs no restoration, it has never left.
I'm not convinced that the common or the 'niche community' is so far
removed - alienated from each other.
