GM: Generative Music...An Evening of Interactive Digital Audio .
Monday 15th March 6pm-8pm
Sherwell Hall: Lecture Theatre1 (Lower) off North Hill,
University of Plymouth.
Admission: Free
Everyone welcome
"I too think it's possible that our grandchildren will look at us in wonder
and
say, 'you mean you used to listen to exactly the same thing over and over
again?" Eno
In many ways the performers and the audience are peripheral...
the computers are happy to generate music regardless. Using
state-of-the-art digital technology 'GM' explores the future of 'music'.
The evening is split into two parts:
1: PERFORMANCE:
'Generative Music' performances by a number of
interactive artists / designers demonstrate the future of
'music' on a range of computer equipment:-
* vision to sound systems,
* random music generation,
* interactive composition,
* 'Old Blue Eyes' and the 'King' fight it out digitally 'Their Way'.
Computer images generated by the performances
will be an integral part of the evening through projections
and live video mixing.
2: PLAY:
the evening will end with an invitation to the audience to play with the
computer systems to generate their own 'music'.
"Does a musical work have to be considered as a formal construction with
firmly
fixed direction? Could one not try to regard it as a fantastic succession in
which the "stories" have no rigid relationship, no fixed order" Boulez

The performance is initiated by STAR and students from MediaLab Arts.
A touring workshop is available to schools in the South Devon area.
"Music must make possible the freedom and dignity of the performers. It should
have in it the persistent capacity to surprise (even the performers themselves
and the composer)." Wolff

Engineering & Technology Week 1999].
