THE BIG M - OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSION
Who: Video/New Media Artists
What: Exhibition opportunity for video works by British Artists
Where: Various sites throughout the North of England
When: May to October 2000
Fee: 200 pounds
Details:
Isis Arts is currently seeking submissions of video work for presentation in
the Big M, an
inflatable millennium dome that will tour the North of England as a
temporary facility for the
presentation of digital video. Unique in both design and function, the Big M
celebrates moving image culture and the impact of new technologies on
contemporary video art in Britain.
Bearing reference to the Greenwich Dome, but flaunting a sci-fi twist, the
Big M will be circa 40 feet in diameter and 20 feet high, housing a central
consul controlling the digital equipment. Three projectors will show work
on DVD, with octophonic sound.
The work will be activated through a 'video jukebox' and will be programmed
by viewers via a touchscreen interface. By selecting work individually, the
audience will be able to dictate the sequence and duration of each showing.
Playing on old-fashioned ideas of the future, the jukebox will include
material from film and
television, in addition to works of video art, in order to map out the
impact that moving image
culture has had on the way we view the world and the continued influence it
exerts on contemporary practitioners of video and new media art in Britain.
The Big M is being designed by Inflate, the UK's foremost designers of
pneumatics, in order to provide both a highly aesthetic and innovative
environment for viewing video.
The Big M will tour the northern region between May and October in the year
2000. Provisional bookings have already been made by many large festivals,
including Alnwick Castle, Kielder, Hexam and the launch of Royal Quays Art
on the Riverside.
Work will be selected through open submission and by solicitation.
