A similar thing happened in the partition of Ireland.
The Morning Post leaked an unresolved line and that
was adopted in panic. This was somethingly based on
opinions in the territory which was potentially either
side of the border. I guess without the leak a more
sensible City State of Protestant Belfast might have
been established?
I'll attempt links away from maps to colours.
I understand it's a fact that any map showing sub
territories can be coloured using four or less colours.
But it was a hell of a job proving this taking lots
of Victorian scholars lots of time to achieve. Is anyone
aware of interesting art work related to this? Or to
geographical mapping more generally?
There's a link from our web page to a project we helped
with which involves mapping a swathe of Northern England
with the project the site reflects by the Harrisons.

There's another which has just gone up to a project by
the artist "Doria Hemming" assisted by a research team
including Professor John Hyatt, Tracey Sanders Wood and
Stephen Twigge who is an International Politics scholar.
This includes a mapping of a cold war tunnel and of post
war colour-coded weoponry.

Both are media heavy with streaming media and shockwave.
The second one has a physical exhibtion at the CUBE
gallery in Manchester - until 28 May 1999.
