Research Associate - Statistical Climate Modelling
A 12-month Research Associate post is available on a project
"Extreme Weather over Northern Europe". The project is funded
by TSUNAMI, an initiative sponsored by a consortium of UK
insurance companies and the Treasury. The post will be held
at the Department of Statistical Science, University College London.
The proposed start date is January 2000, although this is flexible.
The post is on the RA1A or RA1B salary scale, up to spine point 7
(currently £18275 per annum, plus £2134 London Allowance),
depending on qualifications and experience.
This project will study climate patterns over Northern Europe,
focusing particularly on extreme events which give rise to
substantial economic losses. The aim is to use statistical
techniques based on Generalised Linear Models to answer
questions about: whether or not European climate patterns
are changing (and if so, how); what, if any, are the effects
of phenomena such as El Nino and the North Atlantic Oscillation
on European weather; and how the conclusions from these
investigationss can be used to improve risk assessment. The work will
be carried out within a large interdisciplinary research team
(collaborators include colleagues at the Department of Civil
Engineering, Imperial College and the Climatic Research Unit,
University of East Anglia).
The ideal candidate will have, or be close to completing, a PhD in
a relevant area (e.g. mathematics, statistics or climate physics),
and will have a solid grasp of statistical theory and methods.
Consideration will be given to candidates who do not have a PhD, but
do have relevant experience. Familiarity with statistical software
packages such as SAS and Splus would be beneficial.
A formal application for the post requires a letter of application
to Dr R.E. Chandler, Department of Statistical Science, University
College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT ([log in to unmask]),
together with the names and email addresses of 3 referees. Applications
should arrive no later than 31st October 1999. Informal enquiries are
welcomed. Interested candidates may wish to visit the sponsoring
consortium's web site at http://www.nerc-bas.ac.uk/public/tsunami .
University College London is an equal opportunities employer.
