Wanted: Examiner in Applied Statistics for RSS
The Examinations Board of the Royal Statistical Society is looking for
an examiner for the Applied Statistics Paper I of the Graduate
Diploma. The Graduate Diploma is equivalent to good Honours Degree at
a British University and consists of five papers. Two of these are on
Statistical Theory and Methods, two are on Applied Statistics and the
fifth is a paper containing questions on six options. The Applied
Statistics papers contain eight questions of which five are to be
answered in three hours. The Applied Statistics Paper I is designed to
give an understanding of linear models used in statistical analysis,
particularly in regression, time series and multivariate analysis.
Some theory of the standard methods is required, as well as knowledge
of how they are used and interpretation of results from them
(including computer output).
The examination process begins when the Examiner supplies a paper
(with answers) to the Senior Examiner (Richard Boys -
[log in to unmask]) and the paper is assessed by the Board.
The Senior Examiner negotiates any revisions with the Examiner before
the RSS typeset the paper. It is helpful if the examiner can provide
an electronic copy. The RSS examinations are held in May every year.
Some experience in setting examination papers, particularly those with
a similar syllabus would be an advantage, but not an absolute
requirement. The fees for next year are £400 for setting the paper and
£3.50 per script for marking, with a minimum marking fee of £50. The
number of candidates usually totals less than 20. The appointment is
on an annual basis but is expected to be renewed each year subject to
satisfactory performance. The next paper is due to the Senior Examiner
as soon as possible but by November at the latest.
For a detailed syllabus and copies of past papers, please contact the
RSS Professional Affairs Officer (Gerald Goodall,
[log in to unmask], tel 0171 638 8998). Interested candidates should
send a one page CV outlining qualifications, work history and
examination experience, with the name of one referee to me.
Personally, it can be a worthwhile experience. Many of the candidates
are from developing countries where there are no formal statistical
examinations and the RSS Examinations are a useful way for them to
gain qualifications.
