Getting Passion into the Equation, by Simon Singh
British Association for the Advancement of Science
invites you to
The Annual Magnus Pyke Lecture
on Thursday 24th June 1999 at 630-730pm
at the Scientific Societies Lecture Theatre
New Burlington Place, London W1X 1AB
(side entrance of Fortress House, 23 Savile Row)
Simon Singh, director of the Bafta winning BBC documentary and author of
the book on "Fermat's Last Theorem", will discuss the making of the
documentary and the writing of the book. In particular, he will talk
about the constraints, objectives, motivations, pains and pleasures of
making a popular television programme about esoteric mathematics.
After completing a Ph.D. in Particle Physics at Cambridge University in
1991, Simon began a six month traineeship at the BBC's Science
Department. Over the next six years he rose from a researcher to a
producer, working on programmes such as "Tomorrow's World", "Horizon"
and "Earth Story". In 1997 he left the BBC to concentrate on writing,
and published his first book, "Fermat's Last Theorem". He has just
written "The Code Book", a history of cryptography, which will be
published in September.
This public event is dedicated to the leading media scientist Magnus
Pyke and marks the start of the British Association's 1999 Science and
Technology Media Fellowships. The Media Fellowships are intended to
create greater awareness and understanding of the workings of the media
among practising engineers and scientists. The Fellowships have been
funded with the generous support of:The Environment Agency,
Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Committee on
Public Understanding of Science, Engineering, Physical Research Council,
Medical Research Council, Natural Environment Research Council, Particle
Physics and Astronomy Research Council and Wellcome Trust
The lecture is free to attend and will be followed by a food and wine
reception. To book or for more information contact Antigone Garner on
