Research Fellow in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health
The Institute of Child Health is a postgraduate medical school of the
University of London.
The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health is involved in research
and teaching in a number of areas in child health, and some members also
provide a clinical service to the Hospital for Sick Children's NHS Trust.
The Department has multi-disciplinary expertise in, and resources for, the
epidemiological study of childhood disorders. A developing area of research
in the department is the epidemiological study of vision and
ophthalmological disorders in children with work underway on congenital
cataract, unilateral amblyopia and visual impairment.
A full-time research fellow (RA1A grade) is required to join the team
working in this area and to be particularly involved in a new national
study of the incidence and causes of severe visual impairment and blindness
in children in the UK. This will involve working with two established
national surveillance systems, one in ophthalmology, the other in
paediatrics.
The research fellow will work closely with other members of the study team,
including colleagues in other institutions, and will:
1. be responsible for co-ordination of the study, including day to day
administration such as correspondence and other communications
with clinicians, maintaining references and other study documents
2. be responsible for all data management including data checking and data
entry
3. contribute to data analysis
4. participate in writing reports and papers about study findings
5. contribute to other related projects, including the development of
future studies
The research fellow successful will work under the supervision of Dr Jugnoo
Rahi, the lead investigator for this study.
The post is full time and is available for 3 years from September 1999.
Salary is on the RA1A scale, starting between £15,735 and £17,570 plus
London weighting of 2134 per annum, depending on age and experience.
The successful applicant will:
a) hold a higher degree in a relevant discipline
b) ideally have some experience of research in a health related discipline
c) be able to work on their own initiative and have excellent
communication and organisational skills
d) have relevant administrative, word processing and data management and
analysis skills including experience of Word, Reference Manager, Epi-Info
and SPSS or other statistical analysis software
