MRC Biostatistics Unit
======================
Two PhD Studentships
====================
Two studentships are available in the MRC Biostatistics Unit. The
studentships are for a period of three years, commencing autumn 1999.
The Unit has a wide-ranging programme of research on the application
of probability models in biomedical research.
One project which is available relates to modelling of disease progression
and natural history using nested case-control study data. In this project
data are available of screen-detected and interval cancers in a breast
screening programme, closely age-matched with controls screened negative
contemporaneously. The project involves the development of models for
progression from various benign states to breast cancer of various
types, taking into account differential screening sensitivity and
other potential complications.
Other particularly active areas in which research topics are available are
genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics.
Candidates should have a good degree in mathematics, with a
substantial component in statistics and probability. A Master's degree
in Statistics would be an advantage. The successful candidates will be
registered for a PhD in the University of Cambridge.
The Biostatistics Unit is situated in the Cambridge Institute of
Public Health, a University building on a site adjacent to
Addenbrooke's Hospital on the southern outskirts of Cambridge. The
Unit has excellent computing facilities and close links with
substantive research groups both locally and nationally.
Initial enquiries should be directed (preferably by e-mail) to
