Introductory multilevel modelling workshop for social researchers with
applications in health
Three one-day introductory multilevel modelling workshops are planned for
early in the New Year. These are aimed at social researchers working in
health and health-related fields. Participation in the workshops (and a
buffet lunch) will be free, the funding being provided by the ESRC as part
of the analysis of large and complex datasets programme.
The purpose of these workshops is to introduce the participants to the ideas
behind multilevel modelling through a combination of presentations,
discussions and "hands-on" experience. Following an introduction to the
concepts of multilevel models - including different hierarchical structures,
context and composition - there will be a discussion of some papers which
illustrate the application of multilevel modelling in this field. The
afternoon session will be a practical session, introducing the PC-based
multilevel modelling software MLwiN, which will encourage the participants
to explore first-hand the ideas previously discussed. The day will conclude
with a discussion of further applications of these techniques based on the
participants' current research. The day is not designed to turn novices
into experts but to ensure that there is a more widespread understanding of
an area which is becoming increasingly popular in the health literature.
Participants are expected to be familiar with multiple regression.
The first workshop will be at the University of Glasgow on Monday 24th
January 2000 and will run from 9-30 to 4-30. Subsequent workshops will be
held in York and London, probably before April 2000. They will be led by
Alastair Leyland and Alice McLeod from the MRC Social and Public Health
Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow, and Nigel Rice, Centre for Health
Economics, University of York. Numbers on all workshops will be strictly
limited. At this stage we are requesting anyone wishing to reserve a place
on the Glasgow workshop to e-mail [log in to unmask], and anyone
wishing to express an interest in attending either of the other workshops
(subject to confirmation when dates are announced) to e-mail [log in to unmask]
(York) or [log in to unmask] (London).
