OXFORD UNIVERSITY DIABETES RESEARCH LABORATORIES
Diabetes Trials Unit:
Statistical Programmer (Fixed Term)
Research Staff Grade 1A (16,286-24,479)
The UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) is a landmark study of type 2
diabetes. Over a twenty-year period, 5,102 patients took part in 23 centres
around the UK. The results, published in 1998, have had major implications
for the treatment of this disease. A mathematical model for the risk of the
major nonfatal and fatal events in patients with diabetes has been developed.
A statistical programmer is now required to extend the range of risk factors
addressed by the model. Essential qualifications are familiarity with
statistical methods such as maximum likelihood estimation, and experience in
programming in a language such as C, Fortran or Basic. An interest in
diabetes, or in medicine in general, would be useful, as would a first or
higher degeree in statistics or a related subject.
Please send a written application, along with a copy of your CV and the names
and addresses of two referees, to Elizabeth Elton, Diabetes Research
Laboratories, Radcliffe Infirmary, Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 6HE. The
closing date for applications is 12th November 1999, and interviews will be
held in the week beginning 29th November. Further information is available
from Dr Richard Stevens at the same address, email
[log in to unmask], tel 01865 224463.
