We are pleased to announce the 2nd International Summer University at Freie
Universiaet Berlin (Germany), which will take place from July 31st through
August 27th 1999.
The Program
Fifteen fully-credited courses will cover topics on Berlin, Germany, and
Europe. The disciplines represented in the course offerings are drawn from
the fields of History, Political Science, Economics, Law, German Studies,
Modern Languages, Art History, Film Studies and Chemistry. Except for two
courses, all courses will be taught in English. Most courses include
excursions within the Berlin area either as part of the presentations or as
an additional offer. In concluding colloquia, students will discuss the
themes of the courses in an interdisciplinary setting.

2. Architecture in Berlin in the Course of History
3. Art and Thought in Renaissance Germany
4. Berlin: A German Cinema Metropolis
5. German Literature in the Twentieth Century
6. German Language Instruction for Advanced Beginners
7. Creative Writing
8. The Social and Economic History of Germany in the 20th Century
9. Germany's Legal System
10. Environmental Policy and Law in Germany and Europe
11. The Political Development of Germany after World War II
12. Anti-Semitism in the Third Reich: Origins and Consequences
13. Union of Peoples? Foundations and Developments of the European Union
14. International Cooperation in Western and Eastern Europe
15. Laboratory Courses in Chemistry with Seminar
Credits
Each participant will receive a certificate granting 4 credits, which can be
transferred to his/her home university.
Eligibility
Admission requirements are two years of college.
Costs
The tuition fee for each course is DM 1,200.-. There is an additional
onetime registration fee of DM 150.-. The overall expenses for the planned
excursions per course will approximately amount to DM 100.
Application Deadline
The application deadline is May 15, 1999. Later registrants cannot be
guaranteed a place given the limits on course participation. A registration
