The New Communicators: Graduates with Languages
TEACHING MODERN LANGUAGES IN UNIVERSITIES IN THE 21ST CENTURY
East Midlands Conference Centre, University of Nottingham
Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 July 2000
In Spring 2000 the Nuffield Inquiry will publish its report on Britain's
language capability, assessing the extent to which current provision is
'effective, timely and imaginatively
harnessed to society's wishes'. At this crucial time of falling
recruitment to modern
language degree courses, keynote speakers at this major international
conference will address the urgent issues and challenges which are
likely to be highlighted in the Nuffield report. Organised
collaboratively by major organisations and associations in languages
education and CILT, the conference will consider:
* What can UK and European policy-makers do to encourage the take
up of languages at university level?
* What can university departments do to manage change, to meet the
expectations of a new generation of students, and to exploit new
technologies?
* How can a productive, symbiotic relationship between teaching
and research be established?
The conference will provide an important opportunity to review the
outcomes of the HEFCE-funded FDTL projects (and TLTP 3 Alladin), which
has been the biggest-ever investment in university language teaching,
and to attend a range of workshops and presentations on language
teaching issues.

The three-day programme will include the following
* Keynote talks on issues of policy by speakers from the UK and
the European Union;
* Plenary talks on Independent Learning, New Technologies and
Employability by speakers of international renown;
* Panel discussion on the interface between research and teaching;
* A review of the outcomes of the 10 FDTL modern languages
projects and TLTP3 Alladin;
