Dear Listlers,
I want to let WIG list members in on a well-kept secret: the phenomenally
successful, cross-college teacher training program for MA students in
German at the University of Kentucky.
Begun by Linda Worley in the mid-1980s, our TA development program quickly
became a model for such programs across campus, since it includes an
emphasis on classroom research along with foundational courses. Expert TA
supervision continues today under the guidance of our most recent faculty
addition, Harald Hoebusch. Our placement record for students wishing to
enter secondary school teaching is 100%.
We also collaborate closely with UK's College of Education and in
particular with its Masters with Initial Certification (MIC) program. The
foreign language section of the program is headed by the College's most
recent addition, Christel Ortmann, a native German. Ortmann is an expert in
foreign language pedagogy with an emphasis on technology. She is putting in
place an ambitious research agenda in this area and hopes to attract
doctoral students: an additional career possibility.
While BA students can enter the MIC program directly, in practice our
students have taken a two-year MA with us, with at least some time spent
abroad, and then proceeded to enter MIC, which takes a year and two
summers. They finish with two MA degrees and teacher certification. Note
that Kentucky already has reciprocal teacher certification with many states
and is in the process of establishing such certification agreements with
all states. For information on the Reciprocal Teaching Certification
Agreement, see: http://www.edu.Education/TEP/usacert.html
Please encourage your undergraduate majors who are considering a career in
the secondary school teaching of German to come spend a few years with us
in the beautiful Bluegrass. They can find admission information from our
Graduate School at:
http://www.rgs.uky.edu/GS/Gradhome.html
If they wish to find information about the faculty, it is available at:
http://www.uky.edu/AS/German/welcome.html
For a personal contact, they can email our Director of Graduate Studies,
Bernd Kratz, at: [log in to unmask]
Prospects for language teaching careers now look better than they have in
some time. Thank you for your help in spreading this information!
