Department of Civil Engineering
Applications are invited for the following posts in various fields in the
Department of Civil Engineering, tenable from September 1, 1999. The
appointments will be made initially on a two- to three-year fixed-term
basis, all with a possibility of renewal:
1. Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor* in Geotechnical
Engineering
(Ref.: RF-98/99-93)
2. Assistant Professor* in Engineering Mechanics (Ref.: RF-98/99-91)
3. Assistant Professor* in Structural Engineering/Construction Materials
(Ref.: RF-98/99-92)
4. Assistant Professor* in Infrastructure Planning and Construction
Engineering
(Ref.: RF-98/99-94)
* An appointee with an annual salary at HKD740,640 (approx. GBP56,624) or
above may be considered for the award of the title of Associate Professor.
The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the five engineering
departments in the Faculty of Engineering. The Department maintains its
status as a leading world-class institution for research and teaching in
civil engineering and nurtures high-calibre leaders for the community as
well as the civil engineering profession. The Department is active in
research in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water and
environmental engineering as well as transportation and infrastructure
engineering.
For post (1): Applicants should have a Ph.D. Degree in Civil Engineering or
Geotechnical Engineering. Applicants who have over three years of practical
experience and a strong background in teaching and research in Slope
Stability and/or Rock Mechanics are preferred. The appointee will be
expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Geotechnical
Engineering and to develop research in this field.
For post (2): Applicants should have a Ph.D. Degree in Civil Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics. Applicants who have a
strong background in both Theoretical and Computational Analysis are
preferred. The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and
postgraduate courses on Engineering Mechanics, Mathematics, Statistics,
Computational Methods and Computer Applications in Engineering and to
develop research in the fields of Computational and Engineering Mechanics.
For post (3): Applicants should have a Ph.D. Degree in Civil Engineering
with teaching and research experience in Structural Engineering and/or
Construction Materials. Applicants with at least three years of practical
and research experience in both Structural Engineering and Construction
Materials are preferred. The appointee will be expected to teach
undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Structural Engineering and
Construction Materials and to develop research in these fields.
For post (4): Applicants should have a higher degree in Construction
Engineering or Transportation Engineering with over three years of
practical experience in planning and construction of transport
infrastructure projects such as highway and railway projects and with a
strong background in teaching and research in similar fields. The appointee
will be expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses on
Transportation Engineering, Infrastructure Project Planning, Construction
Engineering and Management and to develop research in similar fields.
Applicants should indicate clearly which post and field (preferably with
reference number) they wish to be considered for.
Annual salaries [attracting 15% (taxable) terminal gratuity] are on the
following scales, with starting salary depending on qualifications and
experience:
Professor (in the grade of Reader): HK$898,440 - 1,193,580 (9 points)
(approx. GBP62,096 - 91,252)
Associate Professor (in the grade of Senior Lecturer): HK$861,180 -
1,156,860 (9 points) (approx. GBP65,839 - 88,445)
Assistant Professor (in the grade of Lecturer): HK$554,280 - 925,980 (11
points)
(approx. GBP42,376 - 70,794)
(Sterling equivalents as at December 21, 1998)
At current rates, salaries tax will not exceed 15% of gross income. The
appointments carry leave, medical and dental benefits, an allowance for
children's education in Hong Kong, and, in most cases, a financial subsidy
under the Home Financing Scheme for reimbursing either the actual rental
payments or the mortgage repayment up to the relevant maximum entitlement
may be provided.
