I am trying to discover the names of station which still use portable
steps for passengers to board and alight from trains. This may be
because the platform is of sub'standard height OR because new rolling
stock is higher than the original for which the platform was built. I am
especially interested in the Northern Spirit area.
At my local station, the platform on one side is low, though it shows
signs of having been rebuilt recently. Pacers have been replaced by
Sprinters, and the three different kinds of Sprinters are at three
different heights from the platform whilst one type is also further from
the platform edge. In consequence, old people find it difficult to get
on and off. Their hardship has fallen on deaf ears - on "safety"
grounds!
I have been told that there are legal heights etc for these kind of
things and am waiting for Railtrack to tell me what they are. Does
anyone have knowledge of these?
