Joseph,
We've had alot of success using DEC Alphas with SPM. Our alpha is
about 4yrs old and has only 256MB ram but it still runs roughly twice
as fast as a Sun Ultra 10. The newer DEC's all have dual CPU slots,
much faster CPUs thn Sun's, and a very robust OS. I'd recommend a new
DEC as a cost effective way to seriously increase your SPM speed.
(BTW, I've met many people who seem to think that Solaris is the
end-all in OS and aren't willing to even seriously consider another
platform. I believe this stems from the prevalence of Suns and
people's familiarity with SunOS/Solaris rather than any real
differences in the ease/power of different unix flavors. I've used
many different unix's and in my experience, Solaris no better nor
worse than most others.)
Also, I've benchmarked some of the Pentium II 400MHz machines against
our DECs and found that they have basically identical speed so presumably
a Linux flavor of your choice would allow you to run SPM on a fast, new
PC and provide an even cheaper solution.
