Synopsis:
---------
Under the NHS Scotland Act, the Scottish Ambulance Service's
purpose is to provide Scotland with a National Ambulance Service by
delivering:
1.A comprehensive Accident and Emergency (A&E) Service
2.A Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service
3.An integrated Patient Air Transport Service
Ambulance resources are deployed at some 152 locations across Scotland,
with some crews working from home to large purpose-built stations in
larger towns and cities.
In respect of the A&E service, its performance is measured against
national response times known as ORCON targets. They vary according to
population density.
Performance standards for the Non-Emergency service cover the patient's
time on a vehicle journey, the time delivered to hospital compared to
the appointment time and pick-up time compared to ready time.
For the Air Ambulance, again there are time standards based on the 4
urgency categories.
Activity information is acquired from Command and Control computer
systems. Using this information in conjunction with an operational
research model, it is possible to determine the number of resources
required.
Mr Hayden Newton (Acting Operational Director) and Michael Allen
(Manger, Management Information Services Department) will descibe how
the Service is organised and provide examples of its work in meeting the
performance standards.
