CALL FOR PAPERS
JOURNAL OF THE OPERATIONAL RESEARCH SOCIETY
Special issue on
Operational Research Education: Past, present and future
Guest Co-editors
Michael Pidd and Graham Rand (Lancaster University, UK)
The April 2000 issue of the Journal will be dedicated to papers that examine
topics relevant to Operational Research education.
Since formal OR education began in the 1950s, aspects of the subject have been
taught at many levels and to many types of student. Thus there are
undergraduate, postgraduate and post-experience courses in OR. These courses
might be part of programmes in business, mathematics, engineering and a wide
range of other disciplines. The students may be specialists in OR, may be
taking a 'taster' course or may be studying OR as part of a more general scheme
of studies. The course may be delivered in a conventional classroom, by
distance learning, by open learning. Contact may be face to face, by
correspondence or by the Internet.
The aim of the special issue is to serve to bring together papers that report
developments in OR education which will be relevant to the 21st Century. We
welcome:
? a mix of papers from a range of countries
? some forward-looking, others reviewing past experiences
? some empirical, others opinionated or speculative polemic
? some looking at the education of OR practitioners, some at the role of
OR courses in general business and MBA programmes
? some looking at links with other subjects and disciplines
? some that focus on life-long learning and professional development.
All papers submitted for this special issue on OR education will be subject to
the normal refereeing procedures of the Journal. We hope that its publication
will be part of the on-going debate about OR education.
Manuscripts should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages including any figures and
illustrations. Four copies of the manuscript, following the standard
guide-lines for the Journal of the Operational Research Society should be
received at the Journal Editorial Office (see below for address) by August
31st,1999. Papers needing revision will need to revised within a very short
time-scale. Papers requiring revision that are not revised within this time
scale will not be published in this special issue.
