Three opportunities exist for Mathematical Researchers and Modellers to join
the Mathematics and Decision Systems Group of Silsoe Research Institute at
BBSRC Band 7/6 (graduate/post-doc) level.
Silsoe Research Institute is the foremost UK research centre for
engineering, physical sciences and mathematics relevant to the needs of the
biological industries, particularly agriculture and food. The Group carries
out research and development into mathematical modelling and optimisation at
a systems level modelling in agri-food in order to develop understanding and
provide advice to policy makers and improve decision making by the industry.
The decision process applied to biological systems raises distinct
challenges, particularly in relation to uncertainty and risk,
signal/information interpretation, system optimisation and control, which
need advances in mathematical methods for their solution.
The duties of the posts include:
Development, programming, testing, modification, validation, optimisation
and application of mathematical models and operational research approaches
to agricultural systems. [REF: 12/111]
Research to develop a whole system risk analysis methodology, mathematical
modelling and computational approaches for quantitative risk assessment and
more general probability-based modelling of biological systems, including
food-borne zoonoses and cereal pathology [REF: 12/115].
Research to advance the application of mathematical modelling and
optimisation to decision systems in agriculture and food, which may range
from the cellular level to crops and whole animals, and from new engineering
technologies to impacts on food processing or the natural environment; and
providing the mathematics input in collaborative research projects with
other scientists requiring these skills.
