Session abstract (English):
One of the challenges in studying metallurgy is the dual nature of the
subject. This is a complex field of research where different specialists
from the natural and social sciences join forces. Metallurgy presents a
variety of aspects that includes the study of the geological conditions in a
given area, its mining exploitation and the analysis of the composition of
metal ores and objects. Other themes to be considered are the sociological
and ethnographic interpretation of the finds. The technical side of
metalwork and the experimental reproduction of the different phases of
metallurgy are other aspects to be considered. It is the aim of this session
to reflect on ancient mining and metallurgical development and how the
discussion of various approaches can contribute to a better archaeological
understanding.
