The next MELCOM International Conference will take place at
the Universite de Liege, at the invitation of the Library's
Director.
A preliminary program will be circulated in due course. The
conference will follow the usual pattern with several
sessions of lectures, on both general and more specific
topics, and an excursion to Brussels (Royal library, Islamic
section of the Royal Museum of Art and History, visit of the
exhibition "Maroc magique" at the Royal Museum of Central
Africa). In additional a new International Secretary should
be elected (see below).
Papers are invited for the following subjects: library
automation, the academic library and the internet,
manuscript collections, rare materials collections,
acquisition policies and coordination between libraries,
price developments for Middle East books and periodicals,
conservation and preservation.
Please send proposed titles of papers in English or French
to the Secretary of MELCOM International.
Following the tradition established in former years there
will be no registration fee as such, but there may be a
local charge for incidental costs. Melcom International's
treasurer Mrs. Jill Butterworth will collect any such charge
during the conference.
Fuller details will be circulated soon, but only to those
who have confirmed that they wish to receive them. Please
confirm, preferably to Melcom International's secretary, by
writing or e-mail until 28 February 1999. Please note that
Andreas Drechsler will be away from 15 January until 24
February 1999.
All participants travel by their own arrangements, and will
need to make their own bookings for accommodation.

them are conveniently located at short distance of the
University.
All prices given are in Belgian Francs.

Elections of a new secretary of Melcom International
The present secretary is not available for re-election. The
members are, therefore, invited to propose a candidate for
this post. Melcom International's Constitution requires that
the three posts of Melcom's board must be occupied by
members from three different European countries which would
thus exclude Belgian or British colleagues.
The present board will also try to find a suitable candidate
for the post.
The full text of the Constitution, which was confirmed by
Melcom International's members during the Conference in
Birmingham in 1993, can be seen at
http://www.uni-bamberg.de/unibib/melcom/constitution.html
Hoping to hear from you soon,
Andreas Drechsler,
Secretary, Melcom International
