Hi -
A couple of months ago there was a posting to the list about 'training the
trainers'. I've just attended a 2 day event at the Library Association,
'Teaching skills', which I thought I'd flag up on the list as it was
excellent. I would recommend it to anyone involved in information skills
training, particularly within HE or an adult learning context. The course
leader was extremely knowledgeable and applied all of the different
techniques covered to the course itself.
The first day covered supporting adult learning, good and bad learning
experiences, different learning styles, and planning for a learning event.
This included setting objectives and identifying different techniques to
meet those objectives. The second day kicked off with micro-teaching
sessions - in pairs, the participants planned and implemented a 30 minute
session for the rest of the group which was peer reviewed by the other
participants and an external observer. This wasn't daunting - it was a very
non-threatening environment. It was also an extremely effective way of
applying and understanding the issues covered in the course. The afternoon
then focused on assessing learning outcomes and evaluating learning events,
as well as 'what makes a good trainer'.
The down-side is the course is quite pricey (340.75 GBP for LA personal
members, 412.42 GBP for institutional members, and 477.05 for non-members),
but I'd say it's worth it!
I hope this is of interest - please feel free to get in touch for more
information -
Alison.
