Netskills Workshop:

9:30 - 4:30 Thursday 28th January 1999 Newcastle University
The Dearing report recognises the importance of
electronic information and delivery in education,
particularly using networked resources such as the
World Wide Web. A wealth of resources and techniques
now exists which provide exciting examples
of new teaching practices, and easily accessible
methods for adoption into everyday teaching and learning.
This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide
Web who would like to understand more about how the Internet
can be used for teaching and learning. The workshop aims to
introduce and explore some of the tools and techniques for
teaching using the Internet.
It is suitable for researchers and academics from any
discipline, librarians and computing service staff.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:
* online tutorial courses and distance learning facilities

* using interactive simulation on the World Wide Web
* delivering information such as lecture notes via the Internet
* searching for teaching resources on the Internet

By the end of the workshop participants will...
* have seen examples of how the Internet is being used for
teaching purposes
* have explored online teaching and learning resources in a
variety of academic subjects
* have had experience with different online courseware
* have examined some of the techniques used in distance
learning and online tutorial courses on the Internet, including self-
assesment tools
* have had an opportunity to discuss the issues involved in
Internet-based teaching
* be able to search the Internet for teaching-related
resources
* have an awareness of videoconferencing technology
* have investigated online discussion environments
Workshop Requirements:
Participants need no special technical skills and no
previous knowledge of the Internet; however basic computer
skills such as using a mouse and keyboard are essential, and
experience of using Microsoft Windows to open and save files
and open and close applications e.g. a word processor, would
be helpful.
The cost of the workshop is 99 pounds for participants from higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
