My first thought is to ask whether you have consulted other glossaries -
it would help consistency and general understanding if you could stick
with definitions produced by authoritative or standardising bodies
rather than creating your own. Three sources come to mind, and although
some are from the library field rather than archives, you may wish to
consider them (in the light of convergence of museums, libraries and
archives and all that ...). No doubt there are other sources - I have
not done a search.
1. Anglo-American cataloguing rules. 2nd edition 1998 revision. . -
London : Library Association, 1998, 720p
I have not seen this, as I have the 1988 revision, which contains a
useful glossary as Appendix D. The following definitions come from
that, but may have been updated in the latest edition.
Computer file. A file (data and/or programs) encoded for
manipulation by computer.
Format. In its widest sense, a particular physical presentation
of an item.
Machine-readable data file. See Computer file
Monographic series. see Series 1
Multipart item. A monograph complete, or intended to be
completed, in a finite number of separate parts.
Multivolume monograph. See Multipart item.
Series. 1. A group of separate items related to one another by
the fact that each item bears, in addition to its own title
proper, a collective title applying to the group as a whole. The
individual items may or may not be numbered. ...
2. Standards produced by ISO committee TC 46 / SC 3 "Terminology of
information and documentation". These are listed at
<http://www.iso.ch/liste/TC46SC3.html>, and again some are rather old
but may cover some of the terms you are working on. The full ISO
catalogue is at <http://www.iso.ch/>
3. Harrod's librarians' glossary and reference book : a directory of
over 9600 terms, organizations, projects and acronyms in the areas of
information management, library science, publishing and archive
management. 9th ed. / Ray Prytherch. - Abingdon : Gower, 1999 . -
808p.

Leonard
