The Quality Assurance working group of NAFEMS has identified that
there is not a definitive definition of the terms verification and
validation when associated with performing numerical analysis. It is
noted that the definitions for numerical analysis (may) vary when
compared to computer programming and the normal QA definitions as used
in ISO9001. In order to gauge the variability in definitions across
the numerical analysis community I would be grateful if people would
send me:
(i) Their definitions of verification and validation in the
numerical analysis context; and
(ii) Their assessment of the individual and combined importance of
verification and validation in the numerical analysis context.
To reduce traffic on the mailing lists and news groups I would suggest
that replies should be sent directly to [log in to unmask]
This request has been posted to fea-l, feusers, sci.engr.analysis and
sci.math.num-analysis. If possible I would prefer e-mail responses
from the news groups.
My own definitions are to be published in a paper to be presented at
the forthcoming NAFEMS World Congress. I will post an appraisal of
the replies that I receive up to the end of March in mid April.
