Funny, I know lots of folks in Nevis who think that Kittitians are
colonialists---54% at last count, I think.
And St. Johnians who think BOTH the US National Parks Service and the
Virgin Islands Legislature are colonialists.
And residents of Tobago who think that Trinidadians are expoiting them
pretty mercilessly. (actually I may agree to that!)
And folks in Frederiksted who think they are oppressed by people in
Christiansted.
In 1969 the people of Anguilla revolted against rule by St. Kitts. (That's
two out of three for St. Kitts---their flag's palm tree is getting pretty
raggedly)
I suspect if I lived in St. Martin, Statia or Saba that I would be pretty
sure I was being exploited by people in Curacao, if not Amsterdam.
And within memory, the fine french folks of St. Barths revolted against
their colonialist masters in Guadeloupe---and I have it on good authority
(well maybe I made that part up) that the residents of Baie St. Jean are
prepared to revolt against Gustavia..
Can't we just agree to let the Balkans practice infinite balkanization? and
the rest of us will just try to get along?
Or if we really want to mix it up, we can combine the discussion of
colonialism with the oppression of lingualism and bemoan the lack of
postings in authentic tongues of the people, like Taino or Ge or Gullah or
any of the mutually intellible or mutually unintelligible creoles or
patoises. Or even white people's tongues like Welsh, Gaelic or
Basque/Langue d'Oc.
Oh the vicious sardonicism of old fools....like me...
