2 things immediately strike me about yr quoted texts:
firstly, how peculiar it is that 'we', that is the 'west', engorge
ourselves on russian culture yet at the same time do, collectively,
everything we can to prolong its immiseration. it's as though there are
2 russias, one a landscape of the mind, one a landscape of physical
neglect.
secondly, cannot agree more with some of the points raised re james
joyce etc, tableauxs of misdirected fury are exactly what happen to us.
i had the pleasant task this afternoon of giving a friend a synopsis of
'Ulysees', at the end of which i found myself commenting that if this
sounds like a much ado about nothing it is also one the best-written
books in the language.
apologise for the primitivism of these comments, they are very much
first reactions.
