Hi here,
it seems to me that contestation of key terms is one of the mobilising
forces of this and many a list. Positions and differences aren't about the
resolve themselves and simply be argued away. So much the better. once we
start accepting our differences as to the meaning of words such as:
poetry
british
performance
truth
beauty
form
function
mainstream
accessibility
reader
writer
responsibility
any number of period isms
and terms such as these, we might have a chance at some dialogue. Robust
arguments that will cyclically rage around such axes can be tedious yes.
But they won't go away. Personally I always prefer a quirky example or
anecdote or thick description around which to host such wrangles, than
abstract posturing. As Robert Sheppard suggests, use a word and suggest how
and in what context you are making use of it. That way something else is
part of the discourse.
