At Rotherham we are in the final stages of our HLF funded ViewFinder
digital imaging project which will see the digitisation of our
photograph
collection (c.20,000 items) in combination with current and historical
mapping.
The work of supplying the software, hardware and scanning services was
awarded, after competitive tendering, to Comsult of 67 Goldington Road,
Bedford MK40 3NB (01234 408 408 - speak to Derrick Foster)).
The project has taken longer than envisaged, largely because we
specified
that any software would have to be capable of taking data from our
existing computerised catalogue of the photographs which is in MODES.
The
MODES system was set up 10 years ago when digitisation was hardly a
gleam
in anyone's eye and was not designed with digitisation in mind. We
have
therefore had to do a lot of tweaking of the data to get a seamless
transfer. We have had no trouble with the scanning and the results
look
fine on screen and print out very well. We will be getting our first
public access terminal in mid-December for final testing and bug fixing
and would be delighted to show it to anyone. We hope to go public,
with
six terminals spread around the Borough, early in the New Year.
