I am part of a data standards team working for the National Monuments Record
at English Heritage. My background is mostly in archaeological subject
indexing, but I am now involved in a project to provide controlled
terminologies to our archive cataloguing and curation teams. This involves
providing a number of new controlled terminologies covering a variety of
aspects of archive recording. Rather than re-invent the wheel, I would much
rather identify and adopt existing standard terminologies in use in UK
institutions. I would like to ask list members what terminologies they
recommend / use in recording the following types of archive related
information:-
Generally:
Archive type (currently recorded by a mixture of format and material e.g.
ALBUM, PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIAL etc)
Archive Condition (generally either a subjective assessment e.g. 'Good' or a
list of qualities e.g. 'Torn', 'Faded')
For visual arts materials:
Aspect (internal / external, looking north etc)
Realisation (draft, final, sketches etc)
Architectural styles
For computer files:
File types (ie extensions)
Software used
All comments gratefully received. I will be happy to summarise comments
received for the list.
