19th C. piano builders such as Pleyel, who did not use cast iron frames,
chose to make iron bracing and hitch plates with wrought iron...comparing
the current state of an unrestored 1860 cast piano frame with an 1850
wrought iron bracing you can see one reason. But I expect the mechanical
properties of wrought iron were also desirable in this application. A
source for true wrought iron for making reproductions of these pianos would
be very useful to me.
