Dear all,

I am Joint Course Director for the MSc in Non-Handicapping Environments:
Design & Management course here at Reading. This is the very first
masters course in the field of access and the built environment and is
funded by the EPSRC through the Integrated Graduate Development Scheme
(IGDS). Whilst the course has a strong construction flavour it also
addresses the issues of transport, the external environment and access
to the urban and rural environment. The course is aimed at the
construction and medical professions and attracts national and
international delegates from the fields of occupational therapy,
building surveying, architecture and other health related disciplines.
Leading figures and organisations in the field of access and the built
environment, e.g., The Centre for Accessible Environments and the Joint
Mobility Unit of the RNIB, contribute to the course which has already
established a well respected position within the subject area. The
course began last year and we will graduate our first cohort in 2001.
Further summary details are contained on the attached document and
additional information is available on our accessible IGDS web site at:

http://www.igds.rdg.ac.uk/nhe/index.htm

I am also Research Director of the Research Group for Non-Handicapping
Environments. This has carried out an extensive portfolio of EPSRC,
EPSRC-LINK and European Union TIDE Programme funded research work in the
field of access and the built environment. It is this foundation work of
high quality research which underpins the IGDS Masters course. A
particular example being the EPSRC-LINK Funded 'Project Rainbow: Colour
Selection and the Visually Impaired - A Design Guide for Building
Refurbishment'. The output of this project has achieved a national and
international standing as the only available design guidance on how to
provide adequate colour and luminance contrast for accessible
environments. Further details are available from Dulux Technical Group,
ICI Paints, Wexham Road, Slough, SL2 5DS. In addition I co-ordinate the
National Forum for Lighting, Emergency Lighting and Way-guidance for
Sensory Impaired People. Further details of this and some of our other
research projects are available from our web site at:
