I am sorry about my somewhat incoherant email last night about the
British Iron Co,. The book with stuff in it is Aspects of the Black
country by Charles Elwell published by the Black Country Society.
My interest is that: in the 1790s there was a British Tar Co. (Earl of
Dundonald) tar works at Dudley Wood. It would be of great interest if
this could be shown to be to do with the Attwood family - given:
that the Attwoods were to go on to have chemical industry interests in
Newcastle and very wide financial holdings in the London gas industry
and that some of the people in the British Iron Co, a generation later
were extensviely involved in research into the use of coal tar. Mainly
this is Philip Taylor (and obviously all the Taylor family's interests
are important here) and the Shears were also probably involved with some
London based industrial chemists.
One of my interests really is how all of these people related to the
early gas industry.
My book which covers some of this - although not much about British Iron
- should be available in a week or so 'The Early East London Gas
Industry and its waste products' available only from me.
Mary
