MINET - led by the Trevithick Trust in the UK comprises six partners in
the UK, Spain, France, Italy and Ireland drafting a development plan for a
permanent association of mining heritage centres.
John Morris, of the GSI in Dublin, has provided me with more information on
this project, the partners in which are -
Trevithick Trust (Lead Partner),
France - CCSTI (L'Argentiere),
Ireland - Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI),
Italy - Comunita Montana Valli Chisone e Germanasca, Perosa Argentina,
Piemonte (Gino Baral)
Spain - The Arrayanes Project. Linares, Spain (Jose Maria Perez)
ECTARC - European Centre for Traditional and Regional Cultures, Llangollen,
Wales (Alan Kilday)
Efforts are being made by the French partner (lead by Ian Cowburn) to get
Mine Heritage recognised as an European Cultural Itinerary (cf. for example,
the Santaigo de Compostella Pilgrim route). It is hoped that this pilot
network will be expanded in a second phase, though the funding mechanism has
yet to be identified.
A conference on "Mine Heritage and tourism - a hidden resource" is planned
by GSI for County Tipperary in the autumn, 3-6 November.
The Conference is open to anybody, but they are especially targeting
tourism organisations and authorities in each of the partner countries, Mine
Heritage organisations, specialists and industrial archaeologists.
John Morris is currently finalising the programme etc with a view to
publishing a circular with registration information, forms, info about
trips, keynote and poster displays etc, in mid/late August. The Conference
will incorporate a full day pre-Conference trip to Bunmahon on Nov. 3rd; the
Conference proper on Nov. 4 and 5 in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary; and a post
Conference trip to Shallee, the designated site of the Irish National Mine
Heritage Centre on Nov. 6th, concluding with a medieval banquet in Bunratty
Castle that evening.
I will post further details on the list as they are available.
