Before anyone gets too excited about Ann's it's-better-in-the-dark
theory of poetry readings, I should stress that there's a strong pinch
of irony working there...
I guess if we're worried that we might appear foolish at poetry
readings (or opera, or point-to-point meets etc) we'd better stay
home. The wonder is that in spite of all the posers and nutters and
mobile phoneys there often *is* something that gets through, if we pin
back ears and listen.
This thread started with a reference to one of the places where Things
Got Through quite regularly ('s far as I can tell - perhaps they still
do). The achievment of Winding Stair (amongst others) is that people
can look back on it and say, oh, I heard (whoever) there and they were
great etc. It still seems to me that it's desperately hard to get the
circumstances of the venue right, and that seems to be borne out by
the dearth of other examples coming in of Great Reading Places.
