Dear all,
I know this question has been asked several times before, but I've not
kept the replies and we need some hard information.
We've been asked to find out about other archival institutions and their
policies on charging researchers. At present, for all researchers, we
only charge to cover the nominal costs of copying documents and
photographs. We do not charge for people coming into the archives or
(which is more common) the research we do for enquirers. We prefer to
look for information ourselves where possible, as space is restricted.
Does anyone have any experience of a) charging for all or part of archive
services and/or b) dealing with the problem of raising revenue? I would
especially like to hear from anyone who has had to start charging
visitors and has any information on the effect this has had.
I am aware that this is a problem many repositories are facing. It would
be interesting to see responses from different types of repositories -
not just business archives.
Please reply off-list. I'm away next week, but I will post a summary of
results.
