If I might comment briefly. In the 1950s I worked on an investigation of
failed iron castings and we found titanium at a low level in a number of
unsatisfactory iron samples. At least some of this was said to arise from
the use of bloomery slag in the blast furnace charge. The castings and the
pig iron they were made from could have come from anywhere in the world and
I can't remember any more detail.
