RESEARCH ASSOCIATE in STATISTICS
Post Particulars
Applications are invited for the post of research associate in
statistics for two years in the Department of Epidemiology and Public
Health. The successful applicant will undertake two projects involving
the meta-analysis of data from clinical trials and other studies in a
paediatric oncology setting. There will be opportunities to
contribute to methodological developments generated by the projects,
in addition to the training of health service researchers, and the
provision of a general statistical consultancy advice service.
Candidates should have a Masters degree in Statistics/Medical
Statistics and good communication skills. Experience of systematic
reviews, meta-analysis and modelling in a clinical trials or health
services research setting would be an advantage.
Summary of Duties
1. Undertake a systematic review and meta-analyses of trials and other
studies which consider the use of tumour markers in specific
paediatric oncology settings, this will include conducting
literature searches, reviewing the material found, conducting
a series of meta-analyses, and developing a decision model
under the supervision of a senior statistician and a project
team.
2. Undertake a meta-analysis of individual patient data from eight
international centres on children with germ cell tumours in
order to identify important prognostic factors, this will
include liaison with the centres as regards data
format/quality, pooling of the data and developing an
appropriate prognostic model using survival analysis
techniques, under the supervision of a senior statistician and
a project team.
3. Assist in the provision of statistical and statistical computing
support to project staff on the above studies.
4. Assist with the preparation of interim reports and scientific
publications.
5. Contribute to methodological developments appropriate to the above
projects.
6. Undertake other reasonable duties as may be assigned by the Head of
Department.
The postholder will be responsible overall to Dr K Abrams,
Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics, but will be required to work
closely with the multi-disciplinary teams attached to each of the
projects.
