MRC PhD Studentships in Statistical Genetics
These are available in epidemiology and the social and behavioural sciences
commencing in 1999/2000.
This notice supplements the general advertisement in New Scientist (14th Jan
issue).
Current research areas in genetic epidemiology include; pedigree analysis
problems with multiple ascertainment, comprehensive genetic risk model for
breast cancer, strategies for mapping common low penetrance disease genes,
power of association studies in isolated populations, fine scale linkage
disequilibrium mapping.
Datasets available include several large series of breast, ovarian, prostate
pedigrees; population-based series of breast cancer cases and controls,
pedigree data for other syndromes associated with cancer. Most methods will
focus on qualitative phenotypes but some exploration of methods for
quantitative traits is also possible.
Suitable candidates should have a good honours degree with a high mathematical/ statistical content.
