ZENECA AGROCHEMICALS
VACANCY: POST DOCTORAL SCIENTIST
£20,000-£25,000
MATHEMATICAL MODELLING: THE MOVEMENT OF CHEMICALS ACROSS THE PLANT
MEMBRANES
Zeneca is synonymous with innovation. At our Jealott's Hill Research
Station, we are applying our knowledge and skills to develop advanced crop
protection solutions which are trusted by farmers all over the world. We
operate in a culture which encourages people to be bold and imaginative and
believe that valuing individuals with different backgrounds and experience
will lead to improved business performance.
In order to be effective in controlling weeds, herbicides have to be
delivered to their site of action within the plant. With more effective
herbicides this delivery process is more efficient - i.e. a greater
proportion of the applied herbicide is delivered to the site of action more
quickly, and if we can develop a better understanding of this process it
should help us design more effective herbicides. We therefore have a
vacancy for a mathematical modeller who will develop models for a key part
of the process, namely the flow of formulated herbicides across plant
membranes. Since a great deal of related work has already been done in
other areas of application, the successful candidate will need to do a
thorough survey of the current state of knowledge. He or she will then need
to apply this acquired knowledge by building models that can add value
within the agrochemical sector.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in a relevant numerate
subject, such as applied mathematics, chemistry or physics. He or she will
need a high level of IT skills and will need to have the required
mathematical skills. Since this project also forms part of a wider
multi-disciplinary project, the successful candidate will need to be able to
function well in a team and must have excellent verbal and written
communication skills.
