The BES winter meeting is coming up soon and a meeting room has been
arranged at that meeting for this new "women in ecology" group. Perhaps it
would timely for some discussion about the purpose of this group. It seems
a bit nebulous to me as yet. My experience of other email lists suggests
that activity on this one is pretty slow, 0.122 messages per day. List
membership is also low at 29 list members, even given the 'youthfulness' of
the list. The introduction to the email list says that:
"The women-in-ecology mailbase list is for women working in ecology in
academic and related institutions, primarily in higher education. It has
been set up to encourage and support women, who are clearly in a minority in
this field. The mailbase list particularly welcomes mail on the subjects of
equal opportunities, career advice and questions, and related subjects."
Does anyone have any thoughts, ideas, views on what direction this group
should take? What is its raison d'etre beyond providing 'support'? (a
vague concept at the best of times, except perhaps to a structural
engineer).
