The Multimedia Research Group here at the University of Southampton has
just started several JISC funded projects

I'm working on the video security project, titled ``Innovative use of
Data Networks to Improve Campus Security''. Issues of security in a
campus environment are of importance for a variety of reasons. This
project aims to demonstrate how to make innovative and cost-effective
use of an existing data network, and hosts on that network, to improve
campus security. The main aim of this project is to focus on the use
of video and image transmission over an existing data network as a means
to provide a deterrent to potential offenders and also to act as reassurance
to those present that they are working in a secure environment.
Details of the project are available on the WWW at :-

There are many issues surrounding such a project, and we will attempt
to address as many as possible. Of particular interest to those in
this group are the CCTV surveillance side of things, civil rights issues
etc. Actually, this group seems to overlap a little with the Data
Protection mailing list.
Any views on this project, ideas, information, links to relevant sites
and general discussion are welcome. If you know of anyone who would be
interested in this project and who is not on this mailing list, please
forward them this message ;-)
If anyone would like to contact me directly, my email address is

Many Thanks,
Mark.
