Taking Religious Convictions Seriously: The Impact of Incorporation of
the European Convention on Human Rights. A Multidisciplinary Conference.
Wednesday 6th - Thursday 7th January 1999, at Imperial College London.
>From the Dept. of Legal Studies, University of Central Lancashire, and
the Department of Religious Studies, King Alfred+s College, Winchester.
The Conference aims to explore the challenges facing the English legal
system after incorporation of the guarantees of freedom of religion
under the European Convention on Human Rights and its Protocols.
The conference will provide the opportunity for practising lawyers,
legal academics, policy makers, religious studies scholars, activists in
the field of religious liberty and those interested in the development
and application of legal rules impacting on the religious interest to
come together to share their work, explore common interests, and
identify areas of common concern.
The two days will consist of Keynote speeches from Anthony Bradney of
Leicester University and Eileen Barker of the London School of Economics
and a series of parallel sessions made up of over 30 paper givers from
throughout Britain and overseas, covering the folllowing areas;
- International legal perspectives
- Theoretical issues
- Blasphemy
- Religious organisations
- Competing interests
- Religious interests in practice
- Pluralism and the English jurisdiction
- The European Convention on Human Rights in other European
jurisdictions.
There are still a few remaining places available for delegates at this
conference. The full fee covering all documentation, lunches and
refreshments for the two days is 150 pounds sterling plus VAT. (176.25
in total.)
