ROYAL STATISTICAL SOCIETY/OFFICIAL STATISTICS SECTION
Joint meeting with Sheffield Group
3pm on Thursday 14th January 1999
Department for Education and Employment, Moorfoot, Sheffield
The New Deal
Michael Daly, Employment Service
The talk will concentrate on one aspect of the overall evaluation of New
Deal, the Evaluation Database which has been created as part of the
strategy, and the plans to extend it further, to cover other Welfare to
Work initiatives.
The New Deal Evaluation Database can be seen as a logical development
from previous databases and tracking studies created for earlier labour
market interventions. It is however much more ambitious in scale than
those, and has already proved its worth both as a source of very
detailed statistics on the progress of New Deal, which have been
published since May 1998, and as a support for other aspects of the New
Deal evaluation.
The talk will describe the construction and uses of the database, the
practical issues arising from the use of large scale administrative
databases and the scope for, and implications of, further extension -
not only for the way that labour market interventions are evaluated, but
also their delivery.
