RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN EUROPEAN SOCIAL POLICY
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LUTO
(ONE-YEAR FIXED TERM, IN THE FIRST INSTANCE)
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates, initially
for a one-year research fellowship, in order to develop research
capacity in the area of European Social Policy in the expectation that
she/he will be able to attract external funding to finance the
continuation of her/his post thereafter. The successful candidate will
be expected to work up research proposals, involving as appropriate
collaborative partners in other UK and European institutions, and
prepare funding applications for at least three substantial projects.
Though the nature of such projects will be subject to negotiation, it
is likely that they will include:
o A pan-European study of political perceptions of ecological
critiques of welfare.
o A comparative study of begging and street-level economic activity
in different European capitals.
o At least one other major research project reflecting the
post-holder's own areas of interest and experience.
The fellowship is being created as part of the strategic development
of Social Policy research at Luton, where a specialist core of Social
Policy staff have recently joined the Department of Applied Social
Studies. That department already has a strong and rapidly growing
research base in social work/child welfare (which attracted a 3B
grading in the 1996 RAE) and crime/ community safety (within the newly
established Centre for the Study of Crime, sponsored by Vauxhall). To
this the Social Policy staff (some of whom have lately undertaken work
funded, for example, both by ESRC and JRF) will be bring their own
established and continuing research interests in: poverty, exclusion
and citizenship; welfare reform; welfare rights and redress; informal
economic activity; and community care. The department therefore
provides a positive, diverse and lively environment in which to work
and study.
