MUSLIM FAMILIES IN EUROPE CONFERENCE
23-24 APRIL 1999
If you are interested in submitting a paper for presentation at this
conference, we would be pleased to hear from you.
The conference will bring together scholars and social service
professionals from Europe to examine current political and ideological
debates on the Muslim presence in Europe; family support for the
diversity of Muslim families in Europe; social police and the theoretical
framework of statutory care provision in Europe.
A new report ‘Muslim Families in Europe: Social Existence and Social
Care' will be launched at the conference. This EU DGV-funded study
describes the current situation of Muslim families in the United Kingdom,
Belgium and Denmark. Participating partners are the Indo-Pakistan
Cultural Centre, London; Service Social des Etrangers d'Accueil et de
Formation, Brussels; Dokumentations og Radgivnings Centeret om
Racediskrimination, Copenhagen; and the Race Equality Unit of the London
Borough of Islington.
Keynote speakers at the conference will be:
Yasmin Ali-Bhai Brown, Institute of Public Policy Research, London
Tariq Modood, University of Bristol
Mustafa Hussain, Copenhagen
Proposals are invited on the following key themes:
A. Muslims in Europe, including:
- Politics and ideology
- Multicultrualism and eurocentrism
- Religion, identity and ethnicities
- Family relationships, generation and gender dynamics
- Minority voices within Islam: inclusion/exclusion
B. Social Welfare and Muslim Families, including:
- European social policy
- Statutory care: Muslims and ‘anti-oppressive' models
- Voluntary sector care
- Muslim women and welfare systems
- Interpretation and training
