Apologies for cross postings
Following a recent request for information on 'Shape and Colour Association
to Warning Signals' the following is a summary of responses.
Road signs is a very extensively researched area. If you were here in
Australia, I'd refer you to ARRB Transport Research (formerly Australian
Road Research Board), but I have no doubt that extensive repositories of
research expertise in this area exist in UK.
Arthur, P. and R. Passini (1992) Wayfinding: People, Signs and Architecture,
McGraw-Hill, New York, NY. is a very good source of information on all
things sign-like,
including colour combinations and font types that work well together.
You might try the following source. It is only applicable within the United
States. No information on the UK.
Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Part VI - "Standards and
Guides for Traffic Control for Street and Highway Construction, Maintenance,
Utility and Incident Managtement Operations," 1988, published by the U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
Try section 1A-8 "Color Code", 2A-10 "Shapes", and 2A-11 "Sign Colors
I am not quite clear what you mean by warning signals. The standard road
signs are triangular for informative messages and circular for orders
(mandatory). I am currently reviewing some issues associated with speed
limit signs and if you get any responses in respect of speed limit signs
(perception, minimum sight distances, etc) I would be very interested to see
them. You may want to look back through contemporary ergonomics for some
papers. I find this a useful source of information.
